Game Idea Research

Image
https://www.freeimages.com/photo/clock-7-1427096 Last week I laid out 4 different game ideas into my blog, today I will pick one of them and ponder what Game Mechanics I'll need to consider implementing into the game and whether or not that seems like something I would feel up to doing for the rest of the year. Now I understand how Bridget Jones felt when choosing either to commit to Hugh Grant or the other guy that was in Love Actually(who was not Hugh Grant who is also in Love Actually). The game I've chosen to focus on is the Metal Gear-esque stealth game based on a movie my friends and I made when we were sixteen. The reason I'm going with it is because I've secretly wanted to make it for years and therefore I've given it a good deal of thought. The main mechanic of a stealth game is in the name, Stealth. Therefore the thing that is most important to have in the game is a character to sneak and enemies to sneak around. Easy enough I guess, but I'm still not

Game Brainstorm

What kind of game would I like to make? This is a question I've been pondering since I was a kid, when I imagined myself becoming the next Hideo Kojima or Todd Howard, making games that were universally beloved by the masses and brought about world peace. But now that I finally have the opportunity to make one, I realise I don't really know what game I'd like to make that would be even remotely realistic. Should I make something that will be easy to make but might be a bit boring? Or should I go for something really challenging and make it as fun as possible? I think I'll go with option 2. Game Option 1: The Big One Original Film Poster By Matthew Ledden I've had an idea for this game for a pretty long time, when I was in secondary school I made a short action movie that was a big homage to 80s action movies like Escape from New York and Rocky 4 called "Eternal Vengeance". The main character of this movie was essentially a Solid Snake rip off  called Rola

Unity Tutorial 01

Image
Lesson 1.1 Start Your Engines I was really surprised at how well Unity runs on my laptop when I first booted it up. Usually when I install anything made past 2010 my laptop explodes but Unity runs pretty smoothly for me. THe first tutorial was pretty basic and self explanatory, it felt like an introduction level in a videogame which was pretty cool thematically, learning how to control the camera, create files and place items into your game was pretty fun when reading through the guide and the host of the video tutorial is pretty cool. Lesson 1.2 Pedal to the Metal Things got tough for me here as I didn't have an IDE program to help with the c# so most of my day was spent downloading Microsoft Visual Studio because thats what the guy used in the tutorial. Once I got it set up it was pretty smooth sailing, the videos weren't really as helpful this time as the host seemed to make one or two mistakes that kinda wasted time. It was fun crashing the car into the barrels and I enjoy

Game Design

https://unsplash.com/@roadtripwithraj Reading 1: I found this essay pretty interesting as it hits the nail on the head as to how to fit games into category's, I think video games as an art form are more in need of definitions and genres than say films, as with films, though yes there are rules, the audience doesn't control the film, the film decides how the audience interacts with it whereas with a game, players require guidelines and rules to help them experience what the game has to offer. Reading 2: This essay was very helpful in how it goes about researching and understanding creativity itself. Writers block is a familiar burden so it was excellent to read through the many different techniques one can utilise to brainstorm new ideas. The interviewees had a very interesting thought that its easy to think of ideas but its hard to think of good ideas. Personally I believe that any idea can be a good idea as no one will ever know what will be successful and what will not unti

Mac VS. Technology

Image
https://pixabay.com/illustrations/man-face-surreal-imagination-845847/ The last time I tried to make a video game was in the year 2011, me and my friend were desperate to make the next Skyrim so we had a go at RPG maker and made an easily beatable Final Fantasy knock off that featured all of our friends fighting a dragon, we found it endlessly entertaining and we felt after making one masterpiece we were more than ready for the big leagues. The next week Ben downloaded Unity illegally off some website onto his ancient laptop and... we gave up after spending a day figuring out how to make a circle. Since then I've always had the thought in my mind of what if I could actually figure out how to make things OTHER than a circle in Unity, what if I could figure out how to make an actual GAME. 10 years later I've finnally got my chance and I intend to understand everything that Unity has in store for me and make Tod Howard weep at the sheer brilliance of my game designing skills.
